Automated backup of the persistent volumes for workstations

info

Automated backup is only available for paid accounts. To upgrade your account, please contact customer support.

To reduce the risk of unintentionally losing important files, optionally, the persistent local storage drives for workstations can automatically be backed up once per day, with the previous version retained for one day. This backs up the files stored at /home/bench-user/ within workstations.

Enabling backup

info

To help customers manage their costs, backup is disabled by default. Optionally, customers can enable backup for additional costs.

When you create a workstation, you can enable backup by toggling the backup option.

To enable backup for an existing workstation, navigate to the workstation, click its actions menu, select the "Edit" option, toggle the backup option in the configuration wizard, and finally click the "Save changes" button.

Disabling backup

To disable backup for an existing workstation, navigate to the workstation, click its actions menu, select the "Edit" option, toggle the backup option in the configuration wizard, and finally click the "Save changes" button.

Restoring backups

To restore a backup, follow these steps:

  1. In the workstations page, identify the workstation you wish to restore.
  2. Within the workstation, click its actions menu (three vertical dots) at the right side of the workstation.
  3. Within the actions menu, select the "Restore backup" option. This will navigate your browser to our customer support center.
  4. Within our support center, select the "Technical support" option.
  5. Within the technical support section, select the "Technical support" option.
  6. Within the "Description" field, provide the following information:
    • The ID of the workstation workstation you wish to restore.
    • The path(s) within the workstation you wish to restore.
    • The date you wish to restore. Note, backups of workstations are only stored for one day.
    • The path within your workstation you would like us to restore the backed up files to.

Cost

Backups are charged for the amount of storage for the backup duration at the same rate as the persistent volumes of workstations.

For example, backup for two weeks for a 2 TB persistent volume which is 50% full will be charged for 14 days × 1 TB. In AWS Oregon, the charges for this would total approximately $52.

In addition to automated backup, we recommend that users save important files to the data hub or object storage drives. The data hub and object storage drives are both reliable and cost effective options for data storage.

Need additional backup capabilities?

Deep Origin can provide additional backup capabilities, including backups of your entire workstations, more frequent backups, longer retention periods, and backups to external systems such as user-owned S3 buckets. To discuss additional services, contact customer support.
