Searching, filtering, and sorting database rows

Searching rows

With searching, you to quickly find specific rows in your databases. This feature can help you locate rows without needing to manually inspect each row.

To search a database, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the database you would like to search.
  2. Locate the search bar at the top-right corner of the database.
  3. Click the search bar.
  4. Type your query into the search bar. For example, to find a specific plasmid, enter the ID or name of the plasmid.
  5. Press "Enter". After pressing enter, only the matching rows will be shown.

The video below illustrates how to search a database of plates for plates that contain normalized concentrations of plasmids and proteins.

Filtering rows

With filtering, you can quickly and easily drill down to specific subsets of data within your databases. For example, with filtering you can identify the subset of measurements relevant to a particular project or sample.

Adding a filter for a column

Follow these steps to only display the rows that match specific criteria for a particular column:

  1. Navigate to the database that you would like to filter.
  2. Locate the header for the column which you would like to use to filter the rows of the database.
  3. Click the filter button located at the right of the header for the column. This will open a dropdown menu with filtering options for the column.
  4. Use the dropdown menu to configure the filtering for the column.
  5. After configuring the filtering for the column, the rows of the database will automatically be filtered. Only rows which match all of the active filters will be shown.

The video below illustrates how to filter a database of plates for plates located in a particular shelf of a particular freezer.

Removing a filter for a column

Follow these steps to remove a filter for a column of a database:

  1. Locate the header for the column.
  2. Click the actions (…) button located at the right of the header for the column. This will open a dropdown menu.
  3. Click the "Clear filter" option. After clicking this option, the filter will be removed and the visible rows will be updated.

Sorting rows

With sorting, you can control the order of the rows in your databases based on the values of one or more columns.

To sort the rows of a database by their values of a column, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the database you would like to sort.
  2. Identify the column you want to use to sort the rows of your database. Typically, sorting is performed on columns that contain numeric values, dates, or text.
  3. Locate the header of this column.
  4. Click the header of this column. After clicking the header, the rows will be sorted data in ascending order (e.g., from lowest to highest for numeric values, or from A to Z for text). The up arrow in the column header will indicate that the rows of the database are sorted in ascending order of the column.
  5. To sort the column in descending order, click the header of the column again. After clicking the header, the order of the rows will be reversed (e.g., from highest to lowest for numeric values, or from Z to A for text). The down arrow in the column header will indicate that the rows of the rows of the database are sorted in descending order of the column.

To restore the unsorted order of the rows of your database, click the header of the sorted column a third time. After clicking the header, the unsorted order of the rows will be restored.

The video below illustrates how to sort a database of plates by the date when each plate was created.
